A generous gift to Duke Health by Martin Marietta, a leading U.S. supplier of aggregates and other building materials headquartered in Raleigh, will help fund an expansion of Duke Health Cary for hospital services.

“Martin Marietta’s meaningful contribution in support of Duke Health Cary reflects their commitment to giving back to the communities we serve,” said Gregory Pauly, MHA, group president of acute care services for Duke University Health System and vice dean of clinical and academic integration for Duke University School of Medicine. “Partnerships like this make it possible for us to expand access to high-quality care closer to home, and this significant investment will have an impact on families in Cary and the surrounding region for years to come.”

The gift will support the development of the new inpatient hospital at Duke Health Cary, part of a broader plan for the 85-acre site envisioned as a vibrant, mixed-use community.

Duke Health and Martin Marietta share a commitment to excellence, community, and stewardship, said Michael Petro, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Martin Marietta.

“We view our business through the lens of stewardship and feel that it’s our responsibility to improve our communities,” said Petro, who earned his MBA at Duke and frequently returns to the Fuqua School of Business as a guest lecturer. “With this in mind, the decision to support Duke Health was incredibly easy. This is an important project for the Triangle and its people, and we’re proud to have a small role in bringing it to life.”

Cary and the greater Wake County region make up one of the fastest-growing areas in North Carolina. Adding hospital services at Duke Health Cary will provide access to health care closer to home and work for the rapidly increasing population.

Among those who will benefit are several hundred members of the Martin Marietta team who live nearby and work in one of the company’s local quarries or at the corporate headquarters. While Martin Marietta has a coast-to-coast footprint across 28 states, Canada, and The Bahamas, the company makes the biggest difference by partnering with local and regional organizations that share their values, Petro said.

“Our support of Duke Health is a perfect example,” he said. “Similar to Duke Health, we consider Martin Marietta to be a world-class enterprise that strives to create a better tomorrow. This Cary expansion will do just that.”

When fully built, the Cary hospital campus is projected to employ about 1,600 people.

Petro said the prospect of those new jobs played an important role in Martin Marietta’s decision to partner with Duke Health through philanthropy.

“When we think about these positions, we see people who will use local services, shop in local businesses, volunteer with local charities, and generally strengthen the community,” Petro said. “The Duke Health Cary expansion will create significant economic activity throughout the area, but its total value will be much greater. The project will provide more than health care alone. It will expand the community’s foundation and enable the area’s incredible growth to continue.”

Duke Health broke ground in June 2025 on the new facility, which will house phase one of the new inpatient hospital campus, including an emergency department, surgical services, and imaging, as well as gastro-intestinal endoscopy, cancer care, and other infusion services. The building is expected to be completed in 2027.
